A Guide to Phuket

  • Mar. 8th, 2009 at 2:16 PM

I've been back for more than 2 months, but yet to upload my photos to blog it out. but i've uploaded the photos on my facebook. =)

It was a chore to research online to plan for my trip because of random sources and there were some information i couldn't get online.

So after my experience, this is MY GUIDE TO PLANNING A TRIP TO PHUKET :

1. Exchange Rate.

Exchange rate in Phuket is definitely better than in Singapore. You may be able to get a similar rate in Singapore if you bother to go to Lucky Plaza or Chinatown to ask every shop and do the exchange. But if you had no time to change in Singapore, do not change in Changi.

There is an exchange counter in Phuket Airport, but do not change too much there too. Just change enough to take a cab down to your hotel.

Y ? Because UOB ( in Phuket) offers the best rate and that is not available in the airport. There is quite a number of UOB exchange counters in Patong, Kata and Karon beach. This is for Singapore dollar, I'm not too sure of the other currencies

2. Beach

I stayed in a resort which is at Kata beach. there is 3 beaches along the stretch of beaches : Patong Beach, Kata Beach and Karon Beach. I definetely did not like Patong beach because it is the most populated Beach and it is also more dirty.

Karon and kata beach were both very clean and clear. It was like a big swimming pool. Kata beach have stronger waves which makes playing in the sea more fun. But in April - October, most likely it is not possible to play in the sea because of the strong waves. It is the time where surfers will go.

There are beach seats along the beaches. But you will have to pay 200 bhat for a pair of them. My hotel gave out free 50( I think) seats per day. So we just had to go to the counter early in the morning to get the free seat voucher.

3. Transport

It is possible to walk from Kata to Karon Beach.

But to walk from these 2 beaches to Patong beach, is "mission impossible", as these beaches is separated by hills. So pretty much lotsa slopes.

I tried to walk from Kata to Patong beach on my 2nd day, because somebody (=p) told me the beaches are pretty close and it would take abt 15 mins to walk. I walked and walked and walked .. under the hot scorching sun ( there is practically no cloud in the sky at this time in Phuket ).. through the slopes and more slopes, it took me 3.5 hrs to reach Patong beach.

You can use a tuk tuk but you have to bargain. You can choose to rent car/motorcycle from rental shops along the streets. I managed to source one place during the trip called "Jaroon rental" which is located at 77 Taina Road, Kata Beach. Look out for this friendly looking boss called Jaroon. The more days you rent, the more discount you ca get. You need to deposit your passport as a guarantee. Jaroon will deliver the car to your hotel at your requested timing.

4. Booking of day trips

You have to really walk around and do your own market research. I managed to get 1100 bhat for the phi phi island trip which uses a 25 people speedboat.

5. Food

Do not expect to have cheap food like Bangkok. Most food stores offer western + Thai + Pizza, which i didn't really enjoy.

Most meals will cost you 200Bhat to 300Bhat. So go to phuket to enjoy good western food and not thai food. I particulary loved this place called " two chefs". There is about 3 branches at Kata and Karon area. Very very good!

Other than the western food, it's better to go to Jungceylon which is a big shopping mall at Patong beach. It has many many restaurant including Fuji which is also about the same price as the western food you get along the beaches.

Anyways, i busted by budget cos of the unexpected high price of every meal. So unlike Bangkok.. boo.. even the road side cart stalls sold chicken wings at the price of 20 bhat whereas in Bangkok, i got it for 4 bhat.

6. Weather

The weather is really hot and dry during the peak seaon. Not a single cloud. SO SUN SCREEN IS A MUST!

hmmm.. think these shd be sufficient.. hope this helps.. and will also be useful for me when i visit Phuket again.. =)

To whatever comes tomorrow

  • Feb. 18th, 2009 at 10:36 PM

I donno wat will come tomorrow.

Whether it is a letter, a talk or nothing.

I hope it will be a talk of transfer, if not a letter. The last thing i hope is nothing.

Nothing means I will still stay where i am. Nothing means I will still have the fear of venturing out.

Whatever it is, I believe God will make the best decision for me and I will take whatever that comes to me.

Cheers to a uncertain 2009 and to the future that i still can't see.

(p.s. I believe strongly in Butterfly effect. So to whoever i will meet or not meet in changing the path in life, cheers!)

Taxi inflation

  • Feb. 3rd, 2009 at 10:17 PM

It has been so long since i took a cab.

and when i took the cab from changi airport after my Phuket trip, i was shocked to see the meter jumping by 20 cents instead of 10 cents.

OMG!!

Applaud to marathon runners

  • Aug. 17th, 2008 at 6:15 PM

I was watching the woman's 40KM marathon .

Most of the runners made in in less than 2hrs and 30 mins.

Do you know how fast is that ? it is 16KM/Hr..

to get the picture.

An average guy after NS, normally struggles in their IPPT to get under 12 mins to get a silver ( i think ).

and tt is 12KM/Hr

If they go at the speed of 16KM/hr , they shd be able to do it in 9 mins.

imagine u go at a speed of 16km/hr for 2.5hrs!!!!

i think my max sprinting is 12km/hr.. |o|

Was just doing 5 sets of interval training yesterday, and i was already half dead. and i was doing intervals of 12km/hr for 1 min then jog /walk for 1 min . 16km/hr ??? i think i'll never ever achieve tt in my lifetime. =p

After 3 months

  • Jul. 8th, 2008 at 8:54 PM

I have exercised consistently for 3 months. It is definetely a RECORD. since i have never ever been SOOOOO DISCIPLINED.

My main moltivation of exercise has changed since recently. I started my exercise telling myself.. " I MUST LOSE WEIGHT" and that was my moltivation.. the ONLY moltivation.

After the routined exercise, now it has just changed to "I LOVE EXERCISING" . there is no longer the dread, the excuses, the mental torture of forcing myself to go to gym. Now i love the feeling of my body feeling worked out and the heart beating a little faster and harder than usual. In addition, my hormones have finally stablised after 10 odd years. I had my first regular period ( having for continuous 2 month ), since the day i first had my period at an age of 14. =)

I used to go up the weighing scale every morning and night when i started the exercise as my main moltive was to LOSE WEIGHT. however as my aim slowly started to divert, i have been relying lesser on my scales.

And today, i measured myself. I have lost 2 kg. =) i am proud of myself and the fact remains I LOVE EXERCISING and hence i hope this passion will last as long as i live.

It was good, because i bought tons of clothes and i ate more than 5 bowls of tom yum.

It sucked because i got pickpocket. boo
